“The way we try to recruit girls into STEM fields is all wrong. We typically compare them to some great woman or someone that has gone before them. We are saying, “Hey, you can be like Madam Curie or Sally Ride.” It is recruiting by intimidation. We need to change that message. We need to recruit by appealing to WHY we need them in STEM. We NEED you to help make the world a better place We NEED you to help discover the cure for cancer. We NEED you because you have the ability to change the course of humanity for the better.” —

Tim Holt on why we still see the number of females in STEM fields fall way behind their male counterparts. Also see how geography paved the way for women in science.

(↬ gender and science)

I’m sorry, but that wouldn’t have made me join STEM. You either are interested or you aren’t, but lots of women don’t know if they would have liked it until it’s too late. EDUCATION needs to expose girls to science in an engaging and fun way. Real women professionals need to engage young girls and teach them what it means to be a scientist. If they like it, they like it. If they don’t, don’t guilt trip them into it by saying you need them.

“There’s a part of me that wants to let him in but then I feel myself put this wall up and I don’t understand why. Maybe that’s what strikes me most about Kostas: that despite everything he’s suffered he can still look at life in the most uncomplicated way. I’ve never known that kind of faith. It makes me so sad that people like Kostas and Bridget who have lost everything can still be open to love… while I, who have lost nothing, am not.” —Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

“Girls are taught a lot of stuff growing up. If a guy punches you he likes you. Never try to trim your own bangs and someday you will meet a wonderful guy and get your very own happy ending. Every movie we see, Every story we’re told implores us to wait for it, the third act twist, the unexpected declaration of love, the exception to the rule. But sometimes we’re so focused on finding our happy ending we don’t learn how to read the signs. How to tell from the ones who want us and the ones who don’t, the ones who will stay and the ones who will leave. And maybe a happy ending doesn’t include a guy, maybe… it’s you, on your own, picking up the pieces and starting over, freeing yourself up for something better in the future. Maybe the happy ending is… just… moving on. Or maybe the happy ending is this, knowing after all the unreturned phone calls, broken-hearts, through the blunders and misread signals, through all the pain and embarrassment you never gave up hope.” —He’s Just Not That Into You (via filmquotes)
